If a certain page on an Internet site does not load for some reason or in case a link is broken, the site visitor shall see an error page with some generic message. The page shall have nothing in common with the rest of the website, which could make the visitor leave your website. A solution in such a case is a feature made available from some website hosting service providers - the ability to set your own customized error pages which will have identical layout as your website and which can contain any text or images you want based on the particular error. There are four common errors which may take place and they involve these so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your world-wide web browser sends a bad request to the web server and it can't be processed; 401, if you are supposed to log in to see some page, but you haven't done this yet; 403, if you don't have an authorization to see a specific page; and 404, in case a link which you've clicked leads to a file which does not exist. In all of these situations, visitors shall be able to see your custom made content instead of a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Cloud Web Hosting

You can set up customized error pages for each of your domains or subdomains. The feature is supported by all cloud web hosting plans that we provide, so when you log in to your Hepsia Control Panel and navigate to the Hosted Domains section, you may click on the Edit button for a domain/subdomain and in the pop-up which will appear, you may select the sort of error page that should show up - a default one from our system, a typical Apache web server page or a customized one. For the latter alternative, you'll have to specify the URL to the page, so if you use custom pages, you need to upload the files inside your website hosting account first. One other way is to use an .htaccess file positioned in the domain or subdomain folder with a line for every error type. The exact syntax can be found in our Knowledge Base, to help you use this feature even if you do not have any previous experience.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Hosting

With only a couple of clicks in the Hosted Domains section, you could change the default setting from a system page to a custom one for each of the four error types. All you need to do is supply a link to each file that you have uploaded before that and then save the change. If required, you shall be able to revert this modification anytime and in exactly the same way. If you'd like, you can use an .htaccess file as well. It should be created/uploaded inside the domain or subdomain folder associated with the site whose error pages you would like to modify and the content for such a file can be found in our Help article on this matter.
